Rural Health Network is pleased to announce that we were award a three year grant by Health Services and Resource Administration (HRSA) to provide oral assessments and dental sealants to the 2nd and 7th grade school children of Monroe County.  We conducted a pilot program back in 2002-2003 with a limited number of Monroe County school children.  Several assessment programs have taken place since that time, however none provided sealants.  We are looking forward to promoting the program as well as proper oral hygiene to our community's children.  The program will be headed by our Project Manager, Sandra Higgs, who conducted our pilot program and who has been committed to working with Rural Health once again to help our Keys Community.  Dr. Christine Taggart will be the lead Dentist conducting the clinical aspect of the program.

The assessments and the sealants are done free of charge.  SEALANTS act as a barrier protecting enamel from plaque and acids.  They will be applied by licensed Rural Health Network dentists and hygienist and done during school hours.

Rural Health Network would like to specifically thank the Monroe County School District for partnering with the Rural Health Network to bring this valuable program to the Florida Keys.  PARENTs are urged to sign the necessary parental permission slips, allowing us to do the assessments and sealants.  For further information, please contact Sandra Higgs at shiggs@rhnmc.org or call her at 305-797-6992.
